Map: Social conflicts over public and private investment projects

In 2017 GMI Consulting carried out the first cartographic work in Mexico to map the social conflicts triggered by investment projects. The 2023 version of the Conflict Map includes research in documentary sources for the identification and analysis of social conflicts that have been triggered between 2018 and 2023 due to public and private investment projects in the mining and energy sectors, and the construction industry (infrastructure and real estate development). It is important to mention that the information available in electronic media does not always allow to identify if the conflicts have been resolved at the date of their inclusion in the map, so it is possible that some of them have already been resolved peacefully.

The conflicts have been classified into three main areas: environment and natural resources, land tenure, and Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Additionally, if you wish, you can activate the “Indigenous Regions” layer to know the location of the indigenous regions of our country.

By clicking on each of the conflicts that appear on the map you can consult the following information:

  • Project Type: Energy / Mining / Construction Industry
  • Type of Conflict: Environment and Natural Resources / Land Tenure / Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples
  • Project Name
  • Responsible: Public or private company, institution, or known promoter of the project
  • State
  • Municipality
  • Locality: In case of not knowing in detail the locality in which the conflict happened, the location is georeferenced to the municipal seat
  • Coordinates
  • Fountain
  • Date: Date on which the conflict was triggered in accordance with the information consulted
